In the parable of the Good Samaritan, as told in Luke 10:30, Jesus teaches us the profound lesson of what it truly means to be a good neighbor. This timeless story reminds us that acts of compassion and kindness know no boundaries or limits.

A teacher of the law approached Jesus seeking guidance on attaining eternal life. This led to an insightful discussion on the fundamental principles of life and God’s laws, emphasizing the importance of loving God and one’s neighbor. However, the conversation took a turn when the teacher asked the wrong question, wondering who exactly qualifies as their neighbor. Recognizing the misguided inquiry, Jesus responded with a thought-provoking parable, commonly known as “The Parable of the Good Samaritan.” A man traveled from Jerusalem to Jericho and encountered thieves, who not only stripped him of his clothing but also wounded him, leaving him nearly lifeless. Through this story, Jesus highlighted the stark contrast between the compassionate actions of a Samaritan who helped a wounded Jew and the self-righteous inaction of certain religious leaders. The purpose was to teach the teacher the true essence of being a neighbor when it comes to attaining eternal life. Jesus’ astute response clarified that it wasn’t about identifying who one should love, but rather recognizing and emulating the one who showed mercy. He urged the teacher to exemplify the same compassion in his own life.
